Discover the hidden arboretum of Wageningen: Arboretum Oostereng.
You may already know the Belmonte Arboretum or De Dreijen, but in the middle of the forest there is another arboretum hidden. On Sunday 18 May there will be another public walk in the Arboretum Oostereng. Each season brings new surprises: flowering trees and shrubs, bird song, butterflies, animal tracks, or mushrooms. With the experienced guides you will learn everything about this historical arboretum.
The famous garden architect Leonard Springer designed the arboretum in 1911 as part of the Oostereng estate. After the Second World War it fell into oblivion, until it was later rediscovered. Since then, a group of volunteers has been working to restore it to its former glory. The large trees from back then can still be admired, such as the multi-stemmed beech, monumental maples and the oldest Nordman firs in the Netherlands. But there are also new things to discover: a butterfly garden, a giant xylophone and many types of snowdrop trees and silver firs.
You can register for the tour via arboretum.oostereng@gmail.com until 10:00 on the Saturday before. The walk takes about an hour and a half and costs 7 euros per person. Address: Keijenbergseweg 2, Wageningen.
