Cacha Mundinho

To catch a small world … A tribute to Portuguese music that runs through several continents.

Cacha Mundinho will also play in the garden again in 2025.

Cacha Mundinho, means something like “catch a little world”. “Cacha” is derived from Cape Verdean Creole and is a corruption of catch. Mundinho is a diminutive of the word mundo (world). The music of the lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) world.

The group makes music with an Iberian atmosphere and influences from the Portuguese troubadour tradition, which runs through North Africa, the Middle East, India and Brazil.

Singer-songwriter Joana Almeida uses her original compositions to vividly tell the old, historical stories of these routes, and the musical encounters along the way. In early 2020, Almeida came to Amsterdam from Porto to explore the rich musical cultures that fall under the umbrella of lusophony together with Sjahin During. She remained living in Amsterdam and together they founded Cacha Mundinho.

The quartet brings together the diverse musical influences from these countries and combines them with their first-class jazz and improvisation skills.

In this way, Cacha Mundinho creates a sound all of their own, with which they pay tribute to the music of the lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) world.
Cacha Mundinho consists of:
Joana Almeida | vocals & guitar (Portugal)
Maripepa Contreras | oboe, English horn & duduk (Spain)
Pedro Ivo Ferreira | double bass (Brazil)
Sjahin During | percussion (Netherlands/Turkey)
