More than ten years ago, the Netherlands was introduced to the South African theatre company SOUTH AFRICAN ROAD TRIP. This season, the fourteen singers, dancers and musicians are returning with a brand new show: We Are Family. Coming from Xhosa families – one of the thirteen official cultures in South Africa – these artists have been surrounded by music and dance from a young age. For them, singing together during a meal is just as natural and meaningful as the food itself. In the Xhosa culture, families are central, and traditions are passed on from generation to generation. The mother always plays a special and prominent role in this. Singer and dancer Lungiswa Plaatjies puts it aptly: “My family is my immune system. Without respect, love, communication and wisdom, we can do nothing.” Bursting with energy, South African Road Trip welcomes you to their Family and introduces you to their culture and family customs. In We Are Family, you get to know the singers, dancers and musicians up close through personal songs and family stories. With a cracking live band they bring African songs by artists such as Brenda Fassie, Miriam Makeba and Fela Kuti, but also play hits such as ‘We Are Family’ (Sister Sledge) and ‘Respect’ (Aretha Franklin). South African Road Trip guarantees once again an exciting evening full of singing, dancing and South African vibes.
