Tegenspel

From 18 April to 31 August 2025, Paleis Het Loo will tell the story of three Dutch queens: Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix. Tegenspel shows how each queen finds her own path. How do they deal with their position as a woman and as a monarch? How do they fulfil their task in a male-dominated world? What is the role of the press and the public in their story? Using seven events, you will discover how myths are created and debunked.

Social changes

The reigns of the three queens are a masterclass in female leadership. Wilhelmina ascended the throne at a time when women did not yet have the right to vote. Her daughter Juliana broke age-old traditions by becoming the first Dutch princess to receive a university education. Beatrix modernized the monarchy and restored the distance between monarch and people.

Gender and power

Through the lens of societal changes in gender and power, Tegenspel provides a unique insight into their lives. In public and private. The exhibition shows how they deal with public attention. And how the media deals with them. But private life is also discussed. How do queens fare in love? How do they combine motherhood with their role as head of state?
