Despite the fact that only about 20% of the Rhine water flows through the Lower Rhine, there is a lot of room for the river. From the dike you can see the river flowing here and there in the summer bed. But occasionally, especially in the spring, the entire floodplain area fills up and a wide panorama unfolds over a water surface more than a kilometer wide.

Traditionally there were few places where the river could be crossed; near Wageningen there was a ford on the route from Nijmegen to Utrecht. After the canalization of the river, many village connections were provided with a ferry. The Lexkesveer, a large motor ferry, operates between Wageningen and Zetten, a vulture ferry operates between Blauwe Kamer and Opheusden and a bicycle ferry operates between Heteren and Renkum in the summer.

Please note: The Uiterwaarde ferries operate a summer service from April/May to September. At the beginning and end of the period they only sail during the weekend.
