The ‘Route de Lodewijk Napoléon’ is a cycling route (55 km) with a royal touch. You follow in the footsteps of the First King of Holland. During the period that Louis was in power between 1806 and 1810, he laid the foundation for many things that we still benefit from today. For example, Louis introduced accessible education for everyone and founded, among other things, the Royal Library and the later Rijksmuseum. During his reign, Louis also visited the Barneveld region. So get on your bike and hit the road with King Louis Napoléon.

Lodewijk De Goede, as his nickname was, took the initiative in 1809 to pave the dirt road Amersfoort, via Terschuur, Voorthuizen, Garderen to Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn. Something we still benefit from today. The route starts at Gasterij Zondag in Garderen, which was also an ideal location for a stopover by carriage. It is also known that monarchs made a stopover at other locations. One of the reminders of this is a bust of Louis Napoléon at the hotel-restaurant De Echoput.
