In the 18th and 19th centuries, the wealthier bourgeoisie had numerous luxurious country houses built in the wooded, hilly moraine landscape on the north side of the Rhine. Here they could escape the stuffy hustle and bustle of the city, receive guests and enjoy the outdoors. More than 150 such luxurious country houses were built in the Wageningen – Oosterbeek – Arnhem – Rheden region. Often with beautifully landscaped gardens. Sometimes built on an existing medieval estate, but many also founded as new estates in the open Veluwe nature.
