There was heavy fighting in the area between Arnhem and Wageningen during the Second World War. The much-discussed, failed Allied operation ‘Market Garden’ cost thousands of lives in September 1944. The ‘Liberation Route Arnhem’ starts in the Planken Wambuis nature reserve. Then you cycle towards the Airborne Museum at Hartenstein where you learn everything about the Battle of Arnhem. Then you follow a stretch of the Rhine and cross this river via the John Frost Bridge. This bridge is also popularly called the ‘Bridge Too Far’; after the famous film about the battle for the bridge between the Germans and the British. You will also pass part of the landing areas of the paratroopers of September 1944.
