There is a beautiful rural area between the villages of Veessen and Wapenveld. Swampy floodplains, field edges with poppies, meadows with cows, and above them the Dutch cloudy skies – no wonder that painters loved to capture this landscape!
In 1995, when the Netherlands experienced extremely high water in the major rivers, it was decided that more space should be created for the river. The construction of two new dikes created a channel: the Hoogwatergeul, a unique project in the Netherlands! During extremely high tides, water is led into the channel, which protects the area against flooding. This route takes you along various parts of the Hoogwatergeul. You cycle through the beautiful rural area between the villages of Veessen and Wapenveld. Along the way you pass swampy floodplains, field edges with poppies, meadows with cows, and above them lush Dutch cloudy skies – no wonder that this landscape was also very popular among
painters to capture!
