This cycle route takes you past all the places where there is something to tell about the large numbers of Belgians who found safe shelter in Nunspeet during the First World War. By scanning QR codes along the way you can see even more information and images. You can read all about how the refuge in Nunspeet was built in a very short time and where it was located. You will also see many photos of the residents and read about what they did in the camp. There was much more than meets the eye! There was a hospital and outpatient clinic, schools, a church, workshops and much more. To ensure that life continued as normally as possible, there was a theater club, a wind band and even a Sinterklaas arrival. The many unique photos, made available by the North-West Veluwe Regional Archives, provide a unique insight into this period that is now more than a century behind us. During this period, the population of Nunspeet tripled; For four years, Nunspeet had twice as many Belgians as Dutch.
