The walking route leads through the landscape of one of the most surprising dikes in the Netherlands: the Appense Dijk. This dike was built around 1435. It tells in a unique way about the nature of the landscape around the hamlet of Appen and the interests that have traditionally played here. The many traces of the battle against the water are clearly visible. In the last century, the function of the Appense dike changed due to the construction of a dike with a pumping station at the mouth of the Voorsterbeek. The dike changed from a protective function into an ecological gem with a rich flora and fauna.
