In September 1944, approximately 1,900 paratroopers landed on the grounds surrounding the Schaapskooi during the Battle of Arnhem. The Landmark is a reminder of this. Even today, the Air Mobile Brigade practices their flights and drops of people and equipment with helicopters.

The flock of sheep roams around with the shepherd to maintain the heathland, so that it can be admired in full splendor in August and September, while the skylarks sing their beautiful song. This area was originally agricultural land. Diagonally behind the sheepfold, a piece of grassland and the wooded bank with oak trees can be seen. Overgrazing caused the drifting sand, which was later controlled by the construction of canals and planting of forests.
