Over Velden en Kampen is a 13 kilometer walk through the beautiful village of Elspeet, straight across the heath and past old fields. ‘Field’ is an old name for heathland. Elspeters were called ‘overveldsen’ by Nunspeters: you first had to cross the heath before you reached Elspeet. Camp is the old word for field or farmyard. Many streets and farms in this area have names that end in ‘camp’. The village of Elspeet was already mentioned in 1227. It is certain that this area was already inhabited in prehistoric times. The burial mounds are ancient witnesses to this. You’ll see… have fun walking. It is possible to combine this route with the walk ‘t Kuierpoadje’ (5 Km).
The walking path runs over terrain where wildlife finds shelter. To avoid disturbing the animals and to prevent the spread of animal diseases, dogs are not allowed.
