The first Jews settled in the Netherlands at the end of the thirteenth century. Yet it took until the eighteenth century for Jews to live in Apeldoorn. A century later, Jewish life in Apeldoorn flourished. The first house synagogue services were held in Loolaan, after which the synagogue with Mikveh on Paschlaan was opened in 1890. At its peak, Apeldoorn had more than a thousand Jewish residents who enjoyed a rich social life. The only Israeli lunatic asylum in the Netherlands – Het Apeldoornsche Bosch – was also located in Apeldoorn. After the Second World War, Apeldoorn never again had such a large and vibrant Jewish community.
