Apeldoorn: fun on the square
In Apeldoorn, you can’t miss the Raadhuisplein square in the heart of the city. On fine summer days it’s a sea of tables and chairs at pavement cafés, making it the ideal place to stop for a rest during or after your day of shopping. From latte macchiato, peppermint tea and Cava to peanut butter sandwiches, high-end hamburgers and four-course meals, the likes of Hotel-café de Paris, Rembrandt Lunchroom & Wijnbar, Eetcafé Fijn, Jules Verne and De BroodjesBar offer a varied range of high-quality food and drinks. You can soak up the atmosphere around you while enjoying the view of the former town hall. Nowadays, the listed building dating from 1842 is a wedding venue and also houses two restaurants in the basement.

Ede: capital of taste
In 2017, Ede was named the Netherlands’ happiest city. The shopping opportunities are concentrated in the lively Ede Centrum area. The municipality of Ede is also home to a large number of farmers, growers and manufacturers of local products, some of which also bear the ‘Erkend Veluws Streekproduct’ mark of quality and all of whom offer a unique and surprising product range. In Ede you can buy delicious regional products such as bread, cakes, meats, dairy products, eggs, fruit and vegetables, and even beers and wines. Everything is made on the premises, according to traditional recipes and using local ingredients. The restaurants in Ede also serve a lot of regional dishes in response to the growing consumer interest in locally sourced and produced ingredients.
Arnhem: fashion, fashion and more fashion
You really can shop ‘til you drop in Arnhem. In addition to major fashion chains such as H&M, Zara and Mango, the city is also home to lots of boutiques and specialised stores. For example in the ‘7straatjes’, located directly behind Primark, you’ll find loads of truly unique, unusual and tasty products sold by equally unique, unusual and above all friendly people.
Less than a 20-minute walk away is the Modekwartier (Fashion Quarter), in the heart of the Klarendal neighbourhood. Here, life revolves around fashion, design, art and food, and numerous artists and designers have opened studios, workshops and galleries where they often sell their creations too. As you stroll through the neighbourhood, you’ll soon realise why Arnhem deserves its reputation as a fashion and design capital. Happy shopping!
Shopping tips
- Pollmann (Kerkstraat 41a in Arnhem) is not only one of the country’s oldest tableware shops but also has the biggest collection of tableware products. The shop is a dream come true for lovers of crockery, cutlery and glassware. It carries all the major brands, from Alessi to Schott Zwiesel;
- The 100%-Arnhem label TrixenRees (Kerkstraat 23 in Arnhem) was founded in 1982. The founders, Trix and Resi, met in the fashion department of Arnhem’s ArtEZ Institute of the Arts and they have been designing and making clothes together ever since;
- In the centre of Apeldoorn, the streets called Mariastraat, Korenstraat, Van Kinsbergenstraat and Kapelstraat as well as the Leienplein. Whereas Hoofdstraat is the main street with the major chains, this is where you’ll find the more small boutiques and trendy stores;
- Are you looking for a hip food and drink hotspot? If so head to Rembrandt, a tearoom/lunchroom with an edgy twist in an impressive old building on Hoofdstraat. Sample the delicious coffee made by Apeldoorn-based Bosbrand, or choose from the tasty range of Simon Lévelt teas;
- Special beer in hand, snack platter on the table, or burger on your plate: happiness can be that simple. Try De Proefzaak in Ede;
- The Sonsbeekmarkt in Arnhem is a farmers’ market with a difference. The products on offer are always unusual in some way and come with their own unique stories! The stall-holders have plenty to tell you about whichever type of bread, goat’s cheese or liqueur they are selling.
Late night shopping
Late night shopping in Apeldoorn and Arnhem is every Thursday evening, when the shops stay open until 21.00 h. In Ede, late night shopping is every Friday evening.
Sunday opening
In Apeldoorn, the shops are open on the first and last Sunday of every month! More and more shops are open every Sunday in Apeldoorn. In Ede, the shops are open on the last Sunday of every month. Arnhem allows Sunday opening every week, but retailers are not obliged to open their stores. If you’ve got a particular store in mind, it’s best to check the retailer’s own website for the current opening times.
