In the heart of the Veluwe, the trees suddenly make way for a large open area of heathlands and sand drifts: the Kootwijkerzand. With an area of 700 hectares, the Kootwijkerzand is the largest active sand drift in Western Europe. The monumental radio station Radio Kootwijk is located in the middle.

Rolling hills, tracks of wild boars and red deer, but also birds of prey that roam above the open plains. The emptiness of sand and heath made the Kootwijkerzand ideally suited for Radio Kootwijk: the transmitting station that was built in the 1920s for radio telegraphic contact with the then Dutch East Indies. The large, imposing building fits beautifully into the empty and wild surroundings.
