Old Putten is a privately inhabited historic country estate. Special plant and animal species are found on the estate. You can enjoy beautiful walks and cycling around the estate. There is a small campsite on the estate which offers an opportunity to spend the night; there are hiker’s huts and a natural camping area for peace and quiet lovers.

History

Old Putten Castle is first mentioned in 1186, as a loan from the Duke of Gelre. In 1482 the castle was destroyed by the Elburgers, loyal supporters of the Bishop of Utrecht. The current country estate was built on the foundations. In 1878 the estate came into the hands of the French Huguenot Rambonnet family. Old Putten is included in its entirety as a “Protected Historical Country Estate” on the National Monuments List.

Surface

The total area of the estate is 17 hectares. The estate has a historic house with coach house and a gate house. The house, garden and park forest are completely enclosed by a moat; beyond that lie the agricultural lands, a 1 km long alley and the 5 ha camping site. The Puttener Beek flows straight through the estate.

Location

Old Putten is a 10-minute walk from the medieval fortified town of Elburg. The estate is located in the transition area from the Veluwe massif to the Randmeren. This means an unprecedented number of walking and cycling opportunities. For example, the Zuiderzeepad (LAW) and the Zuiderzee Route (LAF) run along Old Putten. The nearby Veluwemeer has sandy beaches and many water sports options.

Flora and fauna

Old Putten is not only a paradise for campers, but also for the colorful flora and fauna. Have you ever ‘spotted’ a kingfisher, or heard of a rail? In the evening, owls and many different types of bats fly around. You can find a nest of hares under bushes. The country estate is home to many stinse plants, which can be admired especially in the spring.
