The liberation is celebrated elsewhere, but in Arnhem it is mainly commemorated. The Battle of Arnhem is lost and the city is left in ruins. The English soldiers who fought in Arnhem have difficulty with that loss. Yet the veterans and their families are welcomed with open arms by the people of Arnhem. A veteran is surprised by that kindness at one of the first commemorations. He says: “How is that possible? You are so kind to us, even though we have done nothing for you…” But the people of Arnhem think differently. Diny was seven years old when she had to leave the city. She says: “You veterans have given us hope and risked your lives for us. We are very grateful for that and always will be.” The bridge plays a major role in the commemorations. In the evening the bridge is illuminated with red and blue light. The colors of the ‘Airborns’, as the people of Arnhem lovingly say.
