The Kootwijkerzand is a unique piece of nature on the Veluwe. It is the largest drifting sand area in Western Europe. The wind has largely shaped the nature reserve as it is today. The Scots pines, among others, were formed by the wind blowing their roots open. Although the nature reserve consists mainly of drifting sand, many different special plants and wildlife species can be found there. Therefore, even on a sandy plain, there is certainly a diverse flora and fauna. Animal species such as badgers, roe deer, red deer, and wild boars can be spotted here. Furthermore , a number of plants grow exclusively in the Kootwijkerzand—and according to some, even worldwide.

From the observation tower located at Kootwijkerzand, you have a good view of the entire nature reserve. You can climb the tower for free between sunrise and sunset.
