The monument in Otterlo commemorates the battle fought on April 15, 16 and 17, 1945 between the Canadian 5th Armored Division and the German occupier. The battle claimed the lives of sixteen Canadian soldiers, six British soldiers and four residents of Otterlo. It was the last major battle on Dutch territory before the liberation of May 5, 1945.
