Free-spirited women
Female artists in the Veluwe and Flanders, 1870-1930
From 1885 onwards, an artists’ colony developed in Nunspeet. In the period up to 1940, over 250 painters came to the pristine northern Veluwe. At that time, pursuing art professionally was not considered appropriate for women. Art academies did not offer them a full education back then; at most, they had ladies’ classes. Nevertheless, there were independent women who took up the brush to make a living as artists. They painted not only delicate floral still lifes or sweet faces, but also characterful portraits and landscapes. They ventured outdoors and traveled abroad.
Working in the Veluwe are, among others: Sientje Mesdag-van Houten (1834-1909), Blanche Douglas Hamilton (1853-1927), Ima van Eysinga (1881-1958), Marie Wandscheer (1856-1936), Stans Balwé (1863-1954), Chrisje van der Willigen (1850-1931), Aletta van Thol-Ruijsch (1860-1930), Marie van Regteren Altena (1868-1958), Anna Kerling (1862-1955), Jet Dingemans-Numans (1877-1955) and Jo Koster (1868-1944).
In this exhibition we also show the European context by presenting women working in the Flemish artist colonies of Genk, Tervuren and St. Martens-Latem: Euphrosine Beernaert (1831-1901), Marie De Bièvre (1865-1940), Anna Boch (1848-1936), Marie Collart (1844-1911), Louise Héger (1839-1933) who also painted a Veluwe landscape, Jenny Montigny (1875-1937), Valerie Pholien (1873-1961) and Félicie Putzeys (1853-1929).
Female artists prove to be able to flourish precisely in artists’ colonies. Together, the artworks of all these female painters offer a compelling picture of women conquering a full-fledged place in the arts despite obstacles. It is also evident that these emancipated women are committed to social and political emancipation.
