The Noord-Veluws Kunstmuseum: a unique museum that provides a beautiful picture of Nunspeet’s rich past as an artists’ colony (1880-1950).
Precisely in a time of emerging industry and urbanization, the beauty of nature and living close to nature was discovered. Following the example of the famous artists’ colony Barbizon near Paris, artists’ colonies emerged throughout Europe in the course of the 19th century.
In the Netherlands, artists from The Hague and Amsterdam went out. They looked for new inspiration in unspoilt places in and around Nunspeet and Elspeet. An artists’ colony was formed there at the end of the 19th century.
Ultimately, more than two hundred visual artists worked in this region between 1880 and 1950. Well-known painters from the North Veluwe are Herman van der Weele, Arthur Briƫt, Willy Martens, Edzard Koning, Jan van Vuuren, Ben Viegers, Jos Lussenburg and Chris ten Bruggen Kate.
