From July 2 to December 13, 2026, you can enjoy a new exhibition at the Noord-Veluws Kunstmuseum Nunspeet, where everything revolves around the works of brother and sister Jacob & Coba Ritsema. The relationship between Coba and her brother Jacob was more than a simple family relationship; it was an artistic partnership. Their careers followed different paths. Jacob worked as a landscape painter in various artists’ colonies; after Elspeet and Nunspeet, he worked in Laren and Kortenhoef. His sister Coba was the star of De Amsterdamse Joffers, a collective of nine female artists, and thus became much more famous than Jacob Ritsema. She was not a landscape painter and therefore had no business being in the Veluwe. Nevertheless, the work of Jacob and his sister Coba is presented together during this exhibition.
Silent portraits and breathtaking landscapes
Jacob (1869-1943) is usually referred to as ‘a brother of the famous ‘Amsterdam Joffer’ Coba Ritsema (1876-1961)’. With this exhibition, the Noord-Veluws Kunstmuseum aims to once again present the work of Jacob Ritsema—who, as an artist, was merely a transient visitor to the Veluwe—to the public in its full breadth. While Jacob left for the Düsseldorf Art Academy at the age of 15, Coba remained closer to home and developed her talent at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. Jacob encouraged his sister, seven years his junior, to paint. He also gave her painting lessons when they were both living in Haarlem in the late 1890s. A close bond always remained between Coba and Jacob.
Coba’s quiet, meticulous interiors and portraits; Jacobs’ vast and breathing landscapes; and the intimate paintings of the Amsterdam Joffers. Together, in the exhibition, they unfold an image of the early twentieth century that does not revolve around style, school, or genre, but around attitude: a way of looking in which the world slows down. A chair with flowers, a jug gleaming in the morning light, a cow chewing its cud under a low sky. These are moments in which time does not move forward, but deepens.
