In Cortenoever, Jan Willem Breukink and Michaela van Leeuwen run Dairy Farm De Brummenaer together with their children. The family business, owned by the Breukinks for 200 years, has 120 dairy cows and 150 hectares of land. Their goal: to farm fully biodynamically by 2029.
They work in a nature-inclusive way: searching, learning, and sometimes struggling, but always driven by the conviction that solutions to weeds or pests can be found in nature itself, and not in chemistry. They are happy to share the knowledge they gain in this way with others.
In 2020 and 2021, they established a nut orchard with hazelnuts and walnuts. They also planted fodder trees, such as cherry, linden, and willow. These provide shade, supply healthy trace elements for the cows, and enrich the soil and surroundings with life.
Michaela wants to turn the milk from their cows into products “that make the people of Brummen happy”. They already sell cheese under the name De Brummenaer, along with raw milk from their small dairy. In the future, they hope to expand this to include buttermilk, yogurt, butter, and custard.
