The monument De Woeste Hoeve in Beekbergen was erected to remember 117 people, including many resistance fighters, who were shot by the German occupiers on March 8, 1945. The fusillade was one of the reprisals for an (unintentional and failed) attack committed by resistance members on the highest representative of the SS in the Netherlands, the Austrian Hanns Albin Rauter. The 117 executed people were taken from prisons in Apeldoorn, Deventer, Zwolle, Assen, Doetinchem and Groningen.
