On Hommelstraat in Empe, you will find a remarkable sight: a six-meter-high pole structure along which hop plants climb. Pieter Rijzebol and Jeanine Lagendijk have been growing hops on their farm since 2016. The crop thrives on the fertile IJssel clay and provides a beautiful contrast between the corn and grass fields.

The harvest from around 300 plants goes to local brewers, leading to great collaborations, including with Landgoed Beekzicht and Iessel Cider.

In September, the hops are harvested and dried, after which they are sold year-round. Pieter and Jeanine consciously opt for local sales: this gives brewers and beer lovers alike the chance to experience the hops up close, and gives their product a face. The hop field is surrounded by herb-rich grassland and a strip of food forest, which provides not only shelter but also a rich habitat for animals and plants.

During the season, you are welcome to visit the hop field and learn more about this special crop and the collaboration with local brewers. Whether you brew yourself or simply enjoy a beer, this is the place to get to know this flavor enhancer.
