The history of Biljoen Castle goes back to 1530. The Duke of Gelre, Karel van Egmond, ordered the construction of the castle. Since then, Biljoen has been expanded and renovated many times. The last restoration was in 2009.

The house we see now took shape in the second half of the 17th century. The baroque bell-shaped helmets on the towers were added at that time. In the 18th century, the interior and garden design changed drastically. The then owner was inspired by a trip to Italy. The large hall on the first floor in particular bears witness to this. The walls and ceiling of the room are made of plaster ‘Vedute di Roma’.

The nature of the estate is also special. There are old trees. There is a stream and many water features with cascades. There are special and sometimes very rare plant and animal species. The park forest contains an ice cellar, several monumental 18th-century garden vases and garden fences. A special feature is a late 19th-century doghouse on the forecourt in which three horizontal wine barrels form the housing for the dogs. The moat of Biljoen is fed with water from the Beekhuizense Beek. The most beautiful place to skate when the weather cooperates in winter!

The estate is owned by Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen. The castle is privately inhabited and can only be visited to a limited extent (partially). Click here for excursions and more information about Biljoen.

You can walk in the landscape park around Biljoen. Combined with the Velperuiterwaarden or Beekhuizen estate, you can make it a complete (afternoon) day out.
