An impressive spectacle and the beginning of the liberation of the Netherlands. How differently it would all turn out!

On Sunday, September 17, 1944, the sky was filled with airplanes, gliders and parachutes. The fields around Heelsum and Renkum served as the landing site for hundreds of Allied paratroopers and gliders. This impressive spectacle marked the beginning of the liberation of the Netherlands.

Hundreds of paratroopers came down here that day. They headed for Arnhem, but soon discovered that the Germans had blocked the road for them. They tried to break the blockade, but that did not happen as quickly as expected. Only one battalion, that of Lieutenant Colonel Frost, finally managed to reach the Arnhem bridge. This was the first day of a huge military operation that should have heralded the end of the Second World War. Unfortunately, things turned out completely differently.
