The memorial stone at a lock on the Apeldoorn Canal commemorates an action by resistance members Albert van de Scheur and Gijs Numan. On the night of April 16 to 17, 1945, they took a reconnaissance unit of the Canadian army across this lock to demonstrate that the German occupier had left Apeldoorn. As a result, the Canadians abandoned their original plan to attack the city after an artillery bombardment.
