The Maple Leaf Monument, a Canadian maple tree with a memorial stone underneath, commemorates the liberation of Apeldoorn on April 17, 1945. It was erected in tribute to all Canadians who fought for the liberation of the Netherlands and in particular to Canadian Lieutenant General Simonds .
