Upon entering the former non-commissioned officers’ mess, you immediately feel transported to the Second World War. Museum Vliegbasis Deelen has been housed in this distinctive building for many years, a place where history comes to life.

This extraordinary museum is run entirely by passionate volunteers and lets you come face-to-face with a unique and personal collection. From aircraft parts and dioramas to stories of pilots and crews, the air war truly comes to life here.

The museum tells the story of the adjacent Deelen military airfield. During the Second World War, an enormous German Fliegerhorst was constructed here in a short time, hidden in the Veluwe landscape and covering an area of no less than 3,600 hectares, larger than present-day Schiphol.

An important theme is the air war over the Netherlands and the development of German night fighters. Fliegerhorst Deelen played a crucial role in this, including the deployment of radar technology and air defense tactics. An impressive remnant of this is the nearby Diogenes bunker (not accessible), which still captures the imagination.

In addition, in the museum you will discover objects and stories surrounding Operation Market Garden and the post-war history of the Royal Netherlands Air Force.

There is plenty for children to experience as well . With a comic-book-style scavenger hunt, they go on a journey of discovery through the museum themselves—educational and fun.
